They're Doing in America What They Executed with Christianity

The Trump movement's most revealing and defining moments – not its most crucial, nor most brutal, nor most threatening, nor stupidest, but perhaps its most illuminating – occurred earlier this fall. Over the span of multiple weeks, the US president started showing the public his intentions for an ornate dance hall twice the size of the White House and then began independently demolishing the East Wing to build it.

He has performed deeds 10,000 times as bad – the present calculation of deaths resulting from his reductions to foreign assistance amounts to 600,000 and increasing, and presently a study forecast his fossil fuel policies would kill 1.3 million more. However nothing as distinctive. No other president would have risked – genuinely, no previous leader would have imagined – unilaterally destroying major areas of the White House to build a palace-inspired entertainment space, with the direct cooperation of multiple the nation's most affluent, almost all of whom have business with federal agencies.

We transitioned from 'the meek shall inherit the planet' to 'the meek shall die from cholera'

As bewildering as it is to watch the leader seek to颠覆 the established notion about democracy and exchange it with its complete opposite, there exists a significant segment of Americans who should not find it entirely new. That is those of us – among senior generations almost a majority – who were educated as mainline Protestant Christians.

We have witnessed over the years as politically conservative religious groups converted the Savior we learned about into exactly the opposite of our understanding of him. At its most basic, they converted a persona of compassion into a figure of animosity who endorses precisely the cruelties that he denounced in scripture; this change developed more slowly, across decades instead of months, yet it remains unsettling via comparable methods, a bewildering emotional blow for countless people.

A Harmful Christianity Establishes Itself

Hence I shall explain the Savior from my upbringing, as conceptually Christ is the focus of Christian religion, and given that the fastest-growing cadre within America might have little sense regarding him as they consider themselves non-believers or doubters or religiously unaffiliated. I raise no objection with these various perspectives, nor with alternative spiritual paths; but I do think that there are pearls of substantial value in the Christian story.

It is unquestionably definitely not the account of a powerful ruler appearing; rather, a baby is born to parents without shelter in a storage space, who are forced to hastily depart to a different country to evade secret police. The infant develops in humble circumstances, a laboring woodworker; his doctrine concerns compassion for other people, especially for the impoverished – not simply tender feelings, but a concrete one, shown by providing food and protecting. Jesus' answer to aggression is to offer the other cheek – not as an act of passive acceptance, but as a means to teach the assailant; his crime policy is that if a person pilfers your coat you should give him your sweater also.

The evident and direct fact that the Jesus from scripture calls for a type of radical love centered on the impoverished has consistently rendered the Christian faith rather a provocative belief system: engaging for the masses, but due to its inherent radicalness needing to be controlled. In the fifties it was controlled by dilution – The Protestant faith was so widespread that it essentially sanctified existing conditions.

A Struggle for the Finest Within Us

Hence I have become heartened to see the steadfast resistance to Trump arise over the last twelve months. It has provided great solace to participate in developing the movement that has protested openly through repeated demonstrations, and seems to have inspired citizens to participate in numbers in interim political contests. We will need to continue it, and in the same spirit, displaying national flags during all protests and requests to the highest qualities within national heritage.

We shall be interrogated ... about how you treated the immigrant? Did you receive him and receive them or not?

The nation is most protected, in other words, by relationship to the best within national tradition, just as Christianity is most protected by reference to what makes it distinctive and magnificent, particularly the pattern of the Savior. In all circumstances does it mean acting as if the worst of both America and Christian faith was nonexistent; it signifies both modesty and faith, a combination that serious US believers should embrace.
